Bearden Talent Show gives students chance to be center stage
January 30, 2015
Bearden has long been committed to performance-based electives, with activities such as advanced acting and Bearden Singers. Yet, students who are not involved in such groups do not often get the opportunity to be in the spotlight.
For several years, Bearden’s annual Talent Show has given these students the opportunity to change that.
“The Talent Show is not just a showcase for choral students,” chorus director and Talent Show organizer Ms. Mary Sexton said. “It is the perfect opportunity for all the people who have talent and who are not involved in performing arts programs to show off.”
Auditions will be held Thursday in the chorus room with audition spots available from 3:45-6:30 p.m. Of those that perform, Ms. Sexton will select approximately 20 acts to compete in the Talent Show on Feb. 17.
All wishing to audition must be able to attend a rehearsal immediately after school on the day of the Talent Show as well as the show itself, which starts at 7:30 p.m.
“I have been in the Talent Show a few times now, and I think it is a great opportunity for people to practice their craft,” senior Allison Balsley said. “Besides, it is a lot of fun.”
This year, Ms. Sexton is hoping to involve the audience in the Talent Show by creating an audience’s choice award, separate from the judges’ decision. Although this has not been set in stone, Ms. Sexton is hoping that audience members will be able to text their votes during the show.
While the votes are being tallied, Bearden’s a cappella group Off the Chain will showcase the set they plan to perform at the International Competition for High School A cappella (ICHSA) in Ohio, for which they leave two days after the talent show.
“With all these performances, including a cappella, I think the Talent Show should be very entertaining,” sophomore Mary Ciancio said. “Personally, performing is my whole life, so I love this opportunity to share something I love so much with people.”
Tickets for the Talent Show will be sold at the door for $5.
