Staff picks: Favorite fall activity

When leaves start going from green to red, orange, yellow, and brown, fall is here, and with fall break just ending, this pick has perfect timing. When fall rolls around each year, it’s going to pumpkin patches, watching football, and having bonfires season. Everyone has a favorite fall activity, but here are the best of the best picked by the staff this week.

Carving pumpkins is my absolute favorite part of fall. These days, there are so many different ways to carve a pumpkin. People create cut outs of cats, fictional characters, logos, and more, but my favorite has always been the classic Jack-o-Lantern face. Every October, my mom and I hunt for the two biggest and roundest pumpkins we can find, and sit down together to carve them. It’s the best part of my fall. [Cassidy Bailey]

Something that I really love to do in the fall is have bonfires with my friends. I typically whip out my guitar, and everyone joins in an off-key rendition of a High School Musical song, and eat pizza, talk about boys, and just do other teen things. [Maggie Kimber]

With the MLB playoffs, college football, and the high school football seasons heating up, fall has to be my favorite season of the year. In contrast, my favorite part has to be outside of the sports world. Driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina or even riding around the Cades Cove Loop and looking at the fall leaves is the best way to spend fall days. Hopefully, I will get a chance sometime soon to take a drive because some of the leaves are already starting to change. [Tyler Hotz]

As it gets colder outside, people start to put away their soccer balls and tennis rackets, but for me, it’s the peak time of year for the perfect bike ride. It’s cool enough that I can get away with wearing a sweater and leggings and keep from bursting into flames. I love it when the leaves are falling around me as I just take a slow and smooth ride through the park or along a mountain trail. One of my favorite things is when I start to ride and get that cold but sweet smell of fall all in my hair and over my clothes, and I smell like it for days. Bike + sweater + fall = truelove. [Madison Tenney]

Every fall, I go to a church on the corner where they sell pumpkins. There’s just something fun about judging a bunch of gourds to find one that has the right roundness, orangeness, and blemishlessness. Plus, some pumpkin patches donate their profits to charity. [Allie Gruszkiewicz]

There really isn’t any question of what is the best part of fall – it’s college football. Every Saturday in the fall, if I’m not at the Tennessee game, I start watching ESPN College Gameday at 9 a.m., and don’t stop watching games until after midnight. Even with Tennessee being painful to watch at times, college football is my favorite thing to do in the fall. [Wyeth Wilson]

Every year when fall rolls around, I get to watch Halloween movies without judgement. Some favorites include: The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Addams Family, It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, Corpse Bride, and many more. Fall is the perfect time to pop some popcorn, light up a few candles, turn down the lights, and watch the best movies around. [Katie Matthews]
