Members of Bearden’s SGA and Key Club have joined forces and plan to work together on a number of community service projects throughout the school year.

Student body president Naomi Winn and Key Club president Mia Stopka have big plans for their club’s future activities, and the two clubs may collaborate this year more than they have in the past.

Mrs. Autumn Suranofsky has co-sponsored Key Club for several years, and she has become a sponsor for SGA this year. She and fellow Key Club co-sponsor Mrs. Amy Davis have already discussed how the two could work together this year.

“A lot of the big projects that we do at school are either in SGA or Key Club so I think [by] bringing those two groups together, we can really be effective within our school and within our community,” Mrs. Suranofsky said.

“I know that Key Club is going to help with Fall Festival, and I’m sure I’ll try to enlist SGA in helping with Winter Formal as well. I’m sure SGA and Key Club will work in tandem on some big projects and make them even better.”

Winn and Stopka have lots of motivation to lead events that will help their communities.

“My responsibilities are largely oversight-based,” Winn said. “I am the head of my own committee (Fall Festival), but it’s also my job to organize the board and make sure that they are well accounted for so that we can get everything done.”

Added Stopka: “I really love to volunteer. My family has been volunteering for years, and so I thought that I could bring more energy to Key Club and fresh ideas.”

Both Key Club and SGA are school clubs that strive to advance the public environment in making sure that schoolwide needs are addressed and resolve problems within the school and overall Knoxville community. When collaboration between the two occurs, the effects of their efforts will likely be even stronger.

“I look forward to collaborating for big events and hope to have a really tight knit group of students between the two clubs,” Stopka said. “I think that this can be done by Naomi and I talking with our members and getting the word out.”

Stopka anticipates a smooth and productive collaboration process between members of Key Club and SGA, as many representatives in SGA are also members of Key Club.

“It’s up to us to make sure our clubs know what’s going on, and there are a lot of Key Club members that know a lot of the SGA members so working together would honestly be really fun for a lot of the students,” she said.

Winn also encouraged any student who identifies an issue on campus to seek out an SGA rep.
