Once Covid-19 hit, teachers started searching for ways to get students more involved in their schools.
At Bearden, that took the form of lunch room trivia starting in 2020. Now, winners can earn a trophy and a spot in the trophy cases lining the pit, and participation continues to grow on an annual basis.
“The first year, I feel like we had 38 teams participate,” said Mrs. Anna Graham, who came up with the idea. “The next time we did it, I think it was 42.
“Last year, when we did the last one in the spring, we had 52 different teams compete and we had over 485 students on those teams.“
After Mrs. Graham developed the idea, she enlisted the staff of The Bark and BBN to create the questions.
“I think it’s fun that we collaborate on this because usually The Bark will create the questions, and BBN will be guinea pigs for the questions,” said Millie Lovett, a staff writer for The Bark. “It’s funny to see their thought process and how they answer the questions to see if they’re good questions.”
Last year’s winners Libby Derieux, Abby Hurst, Will Mead, Anne Claire Myers, and Celeste Urdal are pictured in a trophy case by The Pit. This year, lunch tables will be able to sign up for trivia Dec. 11 and 12.
“I think it’s a fun thing to do during lunch, and a lot of people participate during it,” Mrs. Graham said.
Lunch room trivia was created out of Covid, but it seems as though it is now a Bearden High School mainstay.
“It was such a great bonding experience between me and my teammates,” Urdal said, “and something we still talk about today.”
