Bearden’s color guard has worked hard to portray more complex emotions through their new theme of “Mirage.”
“Mirage” is a story of a traveling caravan that is dehydrated in the desert. They believe they have found a lake in the distance and travel toward it.
“We’re the travelers in the desert and we are going through this caravan,” senior Allyson Miller said.
Compared to previous years, this theme is much more challenging to convey to the audience. The emotions portrayed are much more serious and in-depth.
“In the past years, we’ve had themes we could somewhat relate to as individuals,” senior Nici Smith said. “Now there is a new set standard – what they expect of us, and what we expect of us.”
Added junior Marlee King: “It’s a lot more aggressive and bleak. Normally, it’s a lot more happy.”
The show ends by the travelers finding out there is in fact no water, and it was simply a reflection.
“In a desert, you sometimes see these dunes that look like lakes, but oftentimes it is just a dried out lake,” Smith said. “The reflection gives off the effect of water.”
The new theme of “Mirage” is definitely a challenge compared to years in the past, but the Bearden color guard portrays it with intense emotion.
