Bearden theater is producing its first ever Disney production in school history.
After the success of Music Man, theater teacher Mrs. Lauren Andrejko knew her “class was ready to take on the challenge” of Disney’s classic Mary Poppins.
Due to the popularity of Mary Poppins, the cast faces the challenge of living up to the many adaptations of the story.
“With every show that we do, there are new challenges,” junior Taylor Haun said. “As far as getting that Disney feel, it’s really important to get this show right because it is so well known.”
To prepare for his role of Von Hussler, a German banker, Haun has had to learn a German accent.
“An authentic feel for the show will engage the audience significantly,” he said.
Junior Natalie Newman is playing the iconic role of Mary Poppins.
“I am so excited to bring this character to life,” she said. “It has always been one of those shows and movies that’s so good and so iconic, it is going to be fun to embody that character.”
To prepare for the show, Mrs. Andrekjo hosted a handful of summer rehearsals. In these practices, students learned how to tap dance, helping bring the magic of Mary Poppins to life.
On top of the additional summer rehearsals, she has moved the show back one week later than normal to help perfect the Disney feeling of the show. Performances will be on Nov. 14, 16, and 17.
Bearden theater and choir are also inviting the community to September Swing on Sept. 21 to help fundraise for the show. The event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. in the West Mall and will include three cook-offs (chili, cornbread, and dessert); a silent auction; line dancing; and more fun events.
