WBIR invited Bearden’s SGA to participate in a Second Harvest competition with Alcoa High School earlier this month, and despite having a limited amount of notice, Bearden managed to win the monetary side of the contest by raising $1,168.
That total was nearly $300 more than Alcoa raised, but Alcoa did end up collecting more canned goods than Bearden.
“Despite the short amount of time and information, Bearden showed up,” SGA sponsor Mrs. Autumn Suranofsky said.
WBIR awarded Bearden SGA with a Second Harvest trophy.
The competition brought more of a spotlight to fundraising for Second Harvest.
“A lot more people were more aware of the event,” Senior Class President Ariel Dickman said. “Teachers were very involved, not just students. It was a whole community event.”
For many years, Bearden participated in an annual Second Harvest competition with Farragut, but the focus on a Second Harvest fundraiser at Bearden started to fade after Farragut stopped participating.
“At one time, we were doing competitive competitions with Farragut,” Mrs. Suranofsky said. “That kind of dissolved.”
Bearden SGA is hopeful that this tradition will continue with WBIR and Second Harvest for years to come.
“Hopefully they are consistent with it every year,” SGA Vice President Thatcher Ella said.
