Bearden theatre’s annual one-act performance is coming up on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
A select group of students will perform the one-act “La Dispute.”
“Most plays are at least two acts, but a one-act is 45 minutes,” junior Nora Johnson said. “It’s very short, and it kind of just condenses all that might be within the two acts into one shorter amount of time.”
“La Dispute” is an old, French story based on the story of Adam and Eve.
“It is set in 17th century France, and basically this king and queen had a dispute over who committed the first betrayal: Was it man or woman?” Johnson said.
Not only will the cast be putting on the show as a performance at the school, but they will also travel to perform for a competition.
“It’s a good fun time,” director Mrs. Katie Alley said. “When you do a competition piece, you don’t build the gigantic set because it has to be a travel play, so it is kind of nice.”
The one-act performance of “Badger” two years ago won the state competition, and last year’s “This Girl” came in third.
The one-act serves as both a fun and impressive play to come watch, as well as a way for cast members to practice for and promote the upcoming shows.
“People think about the one-act, and then they come see it and are like, ‘Wow, that was really good. I wonder what else Bearden Theatre does,’” Johnson said. “So it kind of opens the door.”
The cast will leave Friday morning to compete in a state competition this weekend. The cast has been hard at work for the past couple of weeks tirelessly working with at least two practices a week that are each two and a half hours long.
“It’s really awesome,” Johnson said. “We’ve put a lot of work into it, and it’s a really cool show. … There is this really cool twist at the end that you don’t want to miss.”
Admission is $10 and goes to support the Bearden theatre program.
