After becoming an official sport sanctioned by the TSSAA, flag football has officially taken off at Bearden.
Although this is only the sport’s first year at Bearden, the Lady Bulldogs have had a successful start with a 5-1 record, losing their only game to established program Anderson County.
Bearden hosts Fulton and Farragut on Monday night at 5 and 7 p.m.
“We’re starting off strong,” Coach Zach Scott said. “We’re trying to play with the excellence that is within Bearden sport.”
Additionally, he plans to grow this sport in the future.
“The more girls we get involved in extracurriculars the better,” he said. “It’s been really good for many of the girls to experience playing a sport.”
Aside from receiving immense positive feedback from faculty, the team has become an important part of some of the players’ lives.
Junior center Shea Akagi says that this new sport has challenged her athleticism as a dual athlete, but has also been a way for her to meet new people and create new friendships.
“I think it’s a great environment and the team has been very hardworking,” she said.
This new sport has grown in popularity amongst Bearden girls.
“It has been popular so far and many more girls came out to play than I expected,” Coach Scott said.
Added Akagi: “It’s a new sport, and we’re starting to get known and I think it’s great for girls sports at Bearden. It’s awesome.”
