Clubs such as Key Club and National Honor Society offer a variety of volunteer opportunities for Bearden students to earn service hours.
“Giving back to a community would really show selflessness, and that they just want to really help other people,” said Mrs. Lauren Sanderson, the faculty sponsor of National Honors Society.
Volunteering is important to students for many reasons with one of them being the community experience.
“You get to interact with your peers, gain experience, and give back to your community,” said senior Ella McLaughlin, who volunteers as a member of NHS.
Key Club and National Honor Society both accept service hours in and outside of school.
“For National Honors Society, specifically, we require 10 hours total, and so I allow five of those to come from outside, which could be a church or another organization,” Mrs. Sanderson said.
Added Key Club sponsor Mrs. Amy Davis: “Key Club requires that students volunteer 50 service hours each year. We also allow students to serve on their own, like at their church.”
These clubs present unique volunteering opportunities to students.
“Key Club is good to join if you’re looking for volunteering because it opens up so many new opportunities that you wouldn’t have without that sort of connection,” senior Mallory Simpson said.
Added Mrs. Davis: “A really popular one with the students is Fantasy of Trees, and that is a fundraiser for Children’s Hospital, and our students love to do that. We also work at Ronald McDonald house. That’s our district charity.”
Volunteering is a great way to be involved in the community, and it is a great life skill to have.
