As the new school year begins, many clubs at Bearden are seeking new ways to share information with the student body and grow their presence at the school.
One of those is SGA, whose public relations committee is seeking to grow their social media platforms to promote participation. SGA works on many events throughout the school year including the Homecoming Dance, Fall Festival, and spirit weeks.
Serene Dabbagh and Graham Ella are the co-chairs of the public relations committee and are working toward increasing interaction on the club’s Instagram page.
“Social media can be used to reach a bigger audience because most of the people at Bearden have social media,” Ella said.
Added Dabbagh: “We want our student body to be involved in SGA, and we can do this by posting on Instagram. We also created a TikTok.”
The main goal for Dabbagh and Ella is to use their positions in student government to make a more interactive and participatory environment at Bearden. Dabbagh especially wants to create more content that features a wide variety of her peers whether it’s a picture of members at a weekly meeting or students dressing up for spirit week.
“We would like to post more of the students who dress up for themes, and have people say, ‘Hey, I know that girl!’” Dabbagh said.
Both students hope to curate more personable posts rather than simply displaying important messages, as this helps with media engagement. The co-chairs are working to set the precedent of creative posts.
SGA sponsor Mrs. Autumn Suranofsky is excited for the upcoming year and the changes this year’s president Thatcher Ella is driving through the club.
“He’s really motivated, a self-starter kind of person, and that’s what we need for SGA,” Mrs. Suranofsky said.
