September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and Dawgathon hopes to use this month to create awareness in the school and community.
The club’s mission is to spread the word about childhood cancer and to donate money to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital.
Junior Madeline Councill, president of Dawgathon, is optimistic about what this month can do for the club and its contributions to the hospital.
“We’re spreading awareness not only about this disease and what Children’s [Hospital] does for it, but also all of the money that the club makes this year is going to support cancer research,” she said.
Marketing director Anna Conklin said that this month lays the foundation for what Dawgathon is about.
“It helps us really focus on what Dawgathon is,” Conklin said. “It’s so easy with the fun events in Dawgathon to overlook what our purpose is.”
One of those events is Screen on the Green which is a movie night at Bearden, happening Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. on the Bearden football field. Tickets are $5 each.
Junior Sarah Schaefer, the club’s vice president, is excited for the contributing role the community gets to play in such events.
“The whole community gets involved,” Schaefer said. “Families can come and watch a movie for five dollars and all their money goes directly to the children’s hospital.”
All three members are looking forward to successful events that bring attention to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital.
“In previous years we were a bit unorganized, but this year we are making sure that things are happening and that we are getting the word out about the club,” Conklin said.
To spread awareness at Bearden this month, Dawgathon is handing out yellow ribbons with notes about childhood cancer. Dawgathon looks forward to future events that will help contribute to Children’s Hospital.
