Bearden’s Senior Committee has a new sponsor this school year.
After English teacher Mrs. Anne Fine retired at the end of last school year, social studies teacher Mr. Logan Peterson has eagerly stepped into her role as the sponsor. With the club having such a strong reputation, Mr. Peterson looks forward to getting to work with this year’s seniors.
“Senior Committee had a history of excellence, and I wanted to be affiliated with that,” he said.
Senior Committee is made successful through motivated student leaders. This year, Nora Johnson will serve as president with Natalie Newman as vice president.
Johnson has looked forward to her participation with the club, as her predecessors expressed their own enjoyment years prior.
“What initially inspired me to join Senior Committee was seeing my older classmates be on the Committee really enjoy it,” she said. “That’s what catalyzed my interest.”
However, this was not the lone reason for Johnson’s involvement. After seeing the description for club president, she felt that her own strengths were a good match for the leadership role.
“I felt that I could be really successful in the president position, and it all fell into place from there,” Johnson said.
Similar to Johnson, Newman has expressed an appreciation for her title.
“It’s an awesome job that allows me to help every [sub-]committee [within the club],” she said.
Mr. Peterson has appreciated the added help Johnson offers him, making his own job as club sponsor much easier.
“Nora is really organized and does a great job of keeping everybody on task,” he said. “She is a really good leader in general.”
Newman has also been able to show off her productive qualities as Vice President.
“Natalie is a really good communicator,” Johnson said. “She knows how to make people feel heard, and have those voices be shared.”
The committee is currently working on several projects to celebrate the Class of 2026 seniors, one being the senior quote.
Mr. Peterson values the opportunity that a class quote brings to Bearden students.
“It’s a really good opportunity for [the senior class] to put their stamp on Bearden,” he said.
Johnson said she has a similar respect for the tradition, and is looking to make this year’s quote reflective of the diverse student body.
“Finding something that unifies us can be tricky,” she said. “I would like to find something that can bring us all together even though we are all so different.”
Senior Committee will continue to work to create memorable experiences for Bearden Seniors under Mr. Peterson as sponsor. Senior Sunrise, a senior committee-run event, will take place Friday at 6:15 a.m. on the football field. Donuts and coffee will be provided to students upon arrival.
