Bearden theatre’s social media team has been working hard to advertise the fall musical Legally Blonde.
Business crew head Milena Painter hopes the theatre’s social media presence gives the audience a holistic look into the theatre program.
“I hope people see how much work we put into the program,” she said. “There’s a huge number of people in the cast as well as actors, and there’s several departments, so I wanted people to see the scope of how much work we put into our shows.”
Senior Taylor Haun – who plays Professor Callahan and participates in business crew – agrees, emphasizing social media’s ability to entice the audience.
“It allows people to get a look into what we are working on and put the show on their radar,” he said.
Not only does the content allow non-cast members to develop a connection with the theatre program, but it might attract future students that are interested in musical theatre.
“I think the social media [content] will make students want to join the theatre program,” Painter said.
Having a musical comedy set in the 21st century has not only excited those in attendance, but also theatre students. Abi Lundberg, member of the business crew, has enjoyed making graphics that reference the modern setting of Legally Blonde.
“The cast is really excited about the show, and it’s been fun getting to make designs that have pop elements in them,” she said. “I try to create engaging graphics so audiences will be drawn to come see the show.”
Painter said it has also been a great opportunity for her to expand her artistic experience.
“I’ve been able to build a huge portfolio of my art,” she said. “It goes beyond social media.”
The colorful social media promotions work to attract viewers to engage with the page and later to the show. Painter likens this to the musical’s modern feel.
“I definitely think that it’s resulted in more people engaging with our content because they know the references, or at least the vibe of our show,” she said.
Added Haun: “Having characters from a recent time period featured on social media makes the content really relatable.”
With the intricate set and talented cast, the social media team will work to encapsulate the production in an effort to attract a larger audience prior to opening night.
“Our job is to point the camera at everyone else’s work, while trying to make it look the best we can,” Haun said.
Added Lundberg: “Our crew works really hard to sell the show to the audience.”
