Sophomore swimmer Harper Dickson will be one of many to lead Bearden’s swim team at the KISL City Meet on Friday.
Dickson, who had an impressive showing in the 2025 meet, looks forward to bettering her performance from last year.
Coach Carolyn Bubar attributes Dickson’s success to her dedication to the program.
“As her coach, it’s hard to ignore her work ethic,” Coach Bubar said. “She’s dedicated hours and hours every week to improving her craft.”
Performing exceptional times her freshman year in the 100 yard backstroke and the 100 freestyle at the city meet, she is not yet satisfied and looks to continue growing as a competitor and a teammate.
Dickson is looking forward to a promising showing at this year’s City Meet, which has been moved up a day due to the threat of winter weather this weekend.
“I’m looking to place top 5 this year,” she said. “My times have improved, but I’ve also gotten more involved with the team over the past year.”
Dickson said there will be good competition at the meet, noting Maryville High School in particular.
Although city meet is important to her, the quick approaching state meet is where Dickson’s true focus lies. She looks forward to her 100 backstroke showing in particular.
“Last year I placed 21st [in the 100 backstroke], so I think I’ll be able to make finals this year,” she said.
Friday’s city meet is the final chance for swimmers to qualify for next month’s state meet.
Whether competing at the city or state meet, Coach Bubar can rely on Dickson’s anchored demeanor.
“At any given meet, I can count on Harper to be a calm and focused presence on the pool deck,” Coach Bubar said.
Dickson may be a reliable individual in competition, but she has also shown the heart of a true teammate at both practice and meets.
“She’s locked in, but at the same time she brings good energy and team spirit,” junior Graham Ella said.
Added Coach Bubar: “Time and time again, I’ve seen Harper swim her best not just for her own recognition, but for the whole team.”
Bearden swim and dive will compete this Friday at Allan Jones Aquatic Center on UT’s campus for the city meet. The Aqua Dogs will have a quick turnaround for the TISCA State competition, taking place Feb. 6-7 in Nashville.
