Bearden’s Winter Formal dates have been changed this year to accommodate the busy February schedules of some student-athletes.
Members of the cheer team, dance team, and swim and dive team have had to miss the event occasionally in previous years due to state and national competitions.
This year’s event is Feb. 21 at Bridgewater Place. Tickets are $30 each.
“We wanted to make sure that everyone got the chance to go to winter formal, whether it’s anyone from a freshman to a senior,” said senior Jake Mowery, who is both a Key Club member and a swimmer.
The student-athletes of Bearden are excited about this new change in date, as some of them will get the opportunity to attend the dance for the first time.
“Ever since I’ve been on the BHS dance team, I’ve never been able to go to Winter Formal due to the date because we’ve always had competitions, practice, etc.,” junior dance team member Addie Duggan said. “I’m really excited to go because I’ve heard it’s very fun, and I can’t wait to experience it myself.”
Not only has this change in date allowed for more athletes to attend, but it has also allowed dance sponsor Key Club to extend their ticket sales.
Last year’s dance was Feb. 8, meaning not only did those athletes miss out, but they had two weeks of missed ticket sales also.
“I did notice that all of my friends were getting together, like dance team, swim team, and we were able to help avoid their competition conflicts,” Key Club President Emmaline Hurst said. “It’s going to be really nice, and it is going to be able to increase our sales.”
The revenue generated from Winter Formal will allow for Key Club to donate more toward local charities.
“We only keep the amount of money necessary to run our club, then we donate the rest to different organizations at the end of the year,” Hurst said.
