After losing last season’s front line, the Bearden girls lacrosse team is leaning on the strength and experience of their midfield to guide the team through a new era.
With several key attackers gone, the midfield unit has taken on a larger role in both leadership and production. Junior midfielder Madeline Councill said the group has focused on building continuity while helping new players adjust.
“A lot of people have had to step up into new and larger roles,” Councill said. “We’re teaching new players what worked well last year, and it’s going really well.”
Bearden (7-3, 2-0 District TN East 1-AA) picked up two big wins last week against Farragut and West. The Lady Bulldogs next play at home when they host Dobyns-Bennett on Thursday night at 6.
The changes in personnel and leadership have shifted the team’s offensive identity. Instead of relying on a few standout scorers, the Bulldogs are chasing a team-first approach, emphasizing ball movement.
“I think this year, it’s more team-focused,” senior midfielder Kendall Coe said. “It’s less of forcing the ball in or trying to get your own goals and more trying to help your teammates score.”
Assisting that shift is a midfield group that has played together for years, developing strong chemistry and communication. Councill described it as an “unspoken language” on the field, while senior Kathryn Line emphasized their ability to lead by example and support younger players.
“We can be the support system for the younger girls,” Line said. “If they have questions or need help, we’re there for them.”
In addition to leadership, the midfield is prioritizing possession and smart decision-making to keep the offense effective.
“Possession is key,” Councill said, pointing to the importance of controlling draws and setting up plays.
Line added that “slowing the game down and making smarter passes” has been a major focus this season.
While the loss of the front line created challenges, it has also opened opportunities for growth across the roster. Younger players are stepping into bigger roles and gaining valuable experience that could benefit the program long-term.
With improved chemistry, strong leadership, and team first approach, the Bulldogs remain confident their midfield can anchor a successful season, even in the face of major change.
