Bearden’s tennis program experienced new leadership this year with the introduction of Coach Mary Watkins.
In her first year with the team, Coach Watkins has made a noticeable impact on the program. While stepping into a new role can come with challenges, she described the season as “very positive and productive,” emphasizing her focus on helping players trust themselves and develop new skills during matches.
Players say one of the biggest changes has been the shifts in team practices. With multiple opportunities to practice each week, athletes are not only improving their individual skills but also building stronger connections with teammates.
“These have allowed for so much more camaraderie among the team,” junior Aj Pilant said.
Added Hudson Goodman: “Practices have become a space to experiment, grow, and support newer teammates.”
The increased time together has helped transform the team’s individual style into a more unified team experience.
Coach Watkins has also placed a strong emphasis on doubles strategy and on court communication, encouraging players to work together and adapt during matches. She includes both technical guidance and emotional support in her coaching.
“I want to have ‘face time’ with the player to let them know that I believe they can do it,” Coach Watkins said.
That supportive leadership style has drawn the attention of her team. Players describe her as approachable, focused, and supportive.
Watkins encourages players to attend matches even if they are not competing. This has created an environment of support and encouragement.
Simple things, like cheering on teammates or offering positive affirmations, have helped strengthen team morale.
“[Coach Watkins] has set the expectation that all players cheer on and support one another,” Pilant said. “This season, team energy was higher and players were more engaged. It’s been great.”
Although the season has come to an end for most of the team, sophomore Emily Odom continues in post-season play.
Odom came second in the district and has qualified for regionals. Odom plays Monday for a chance at the regional finals and potentially a state run.
“I never thought that I would be able to make it this far,” Odom said. “It’s been an amazing experience and has inspired me to want to get to the next level.”
